About GreenTech Empowerment Kenya (GTEK)

At GreenTech Empowerment Kenya (GTEK), we see every challenge as a gateway to meaningful impact. With a mission to empower communities, we apply sustainable practices and appropriate technologies to tackle some of Kenya’s most urgent environmental, social, and economic challenges. Our core work spans renewable energy, environmental conservation, education, and inclusive resilience-building. From solar-powered classrooms and climate-smart farming to microinsurance for vulnerable families, our initiatives are designed to create long-term value on the ground. We also explore community-driven innovations that improve food systems and build circular economies, quietly laying the groundwork for scalable, future-ready solutions. In addition, GTEK contributes to policy thinking and provides advisory support to expand high-impact models from pilot stage to broader implementation. At our heart, we are collaborators, working with people, partners, and ideas to shape a just, sustainable future. Together, we’re creating pathways that restore ecosystems, unlock opportunity, and inspire transformation.

OUR IMPACT

At GreenTech Empowerment Kenya (GTEK), our work is already creating ripples of change in the communities we serve. Our innovative approaches and targeted initiatives are addressing Kenya's most pressing challenges. Here’s how we’re making an impact:

  • Building Climate Resilience in Flood-Prone Areas
Through the Community-Managed Flood Insurance Scheme, we are protecting families in Kisumu County from devastating flood-related losses. By combining financial security and resilience incentives, this initiative is setting the foundation for safeguarding vulnerable populations affected by climate change.

  • Empowering Education with Solar Energy
Schools in off-grid areas now benefit from solar-powered classrooms, enabling over 500 students to access uninterrupted learning. This initiative not only improves education outcomes but also fosters innovation by integrating digital learning tools in remote areas.

  • Promoting Sustainable Farming to Combat Hunger
By introducing climate-smart agriculture practices, such as drought-resistant crops and solar-powered irrigation systems, GTEK is helping rural farmers mitigate the impacts of erratic rainfall. These efforts are boosting productivity and improving food security for hundreds of households.

  • Advancing Reforestation to Address Climate Change
In partnership with local communities, we have planted over 10,000 trees in deforested areas to restore biodiversity, stabilize soil, and reduce carbon emissions. This effort is directly contributing to Kenya’s goal of achieving 10% forest cover by 2030.

  • Facilitating Clean Water Access
Solar-powered water pumps installed in rural villages are providing clean and sustainable water to over 1,000 families. This initiative is reducing waterborne diseases and improving health outcomes for women and children, who often bear the burden of water collection.

  • Empowering Women and Youth Through Green Jobs
Over 200 women and youth have been trained in renewable energy technologies, such as solar panel installation and maintenance. These skills are not only creating economic opportunities but also fostering a new generation of sustainability leaders.

  • Expanding Financial Inclusion Through Mobile Technology
Leveraging Kenya’s widespread mobile penetration, we’ve developed systems that allow low-income households to access insurance, make claims, and pay premiums through SMS and mobile money platforms like M-Pesa, ensuring financial services are accessible to all.

The Numbers Speak.
  • Kenya loses an estimated 3% of GDP annually to climate-related disasters like floods and droughts. Our projects aim to directly reduce this economic burden by empowering communities with tools for resilience and recovery.
  • The World Bank reports that 30% of rural households lack access to electricity. Through our renewable energy initiatives, we are lighting up lives and creating opportunities in these underserved regions.
  • Studies show that 1.2 million Kenyan children are out of school due to poverty and lack of infrastructure. Our digital education programs are bridging this gap by ensuring equitable access to modern tools.

GTEK is committed to scaling these efforts across Kenya and beyond. Our work is about more than statistics—it’s about transforming lives, empowering communities, and creating a future where every individual has the tools to thrive. Together, we’re building a more resilient and hopeful tomorrow.
